Fire Operations Division

The Operations Division is likely the most recognizable component of our department, and consists of 27 full-time sworn firefighters who operate on three shifts. All crews work a modified-Kelly schedule of 24 hour shifts, and each shift ensures that citizens and travelers within the Scott Township Fire Territory receive high-quality emergency response services. Each shift is lead by a Captain and Lieutenant, who supervise the FF/EMTs, FF/Paramedics, & Civilian Paramedics across each of our three stations. Vanderburgh County Fire Department is the only department in suburban Vanderburgh County that maintains a minimum staffing standard of at least seven certified interior firefighters per shift, which means that fire apparatus on our response plan arrives with no less than two full-time sworn firefighters each, and that all incidents that occur in our district receive the same response capacity, regardless of time of day or day of the week.

All of our fire apparatus are staffed by professional fire fighters, and each of our three stations are crewed by cross-trained Firefighter/EMTs and/or Firefighter/Paramedics. We have a dedicated Engine Company located at our Station 1 on Baseline Road, which responds as additional staffing to any fire, motor vehicle collision, or medical emergency. Additionally, our volunteer cadre provide additional staffing during incidents involving extended scene time.

Our Goal: Provide professional, 24/7 emergency response services to the community which exceed the national response and safety standards, including fire suppression, technical rescue, and emergency medical services, in order to save lives, protect property, and minimize an incident’s environmental impact.

What We Do:
• Fireground Operations such as residential & commercial structure fires, field & brush fires, and vehicle fires.
• Rescue Operations such as vehicle extrications and ice water rescues.
• Community Risk Reduction Initiatives including public education, smoke alarm installation, hydrant testing, fire investigations, building inspections, and incident preplanning.
