About Us
Vanderburgh County Fire Department provides fire protection, medical treatment and transport, public education, inspections, and aid for other types of emergencies for persons and property in the area of the Scott Township Fire Territory, which includes Scott Township, Armstrong Township, German Township, and the Town of Darmstadt. In addition, we also provide assistance to other agencies during times of need through our mutual aid agreements.
Our department is trained, equipped, and ready to respond to:
• Fire emergencies, including those involving homes, businesses, grass/brush, and vehicles.
• Medical emergency needs including basic or advanced life support and transport.
• Rescue needs such as vehicle extrication and ice water rescue.
• Fire prevention activities including public education, investigations, inspections, and incident preplanning.
Vanderburgh County Fire Department is a combination department made up of dedicated individuals working together to provide these services to our community. The department employs full-time, part-time, and volunteer personnel, and is currently the only fire department in the local Tri-State area to provide advanced life support ambulance services to its residents.
Merger & Expanded Service
For generations, northwestern Vanderburgh County has been served by dedicated local volunteer fire departments. Scott Township Fire Department (later Scott Township Fire & EMS) was founded in 1956, and German Township Fire Department in 1959. In 2025, their histories and expertise came together with the formation of the Vanderburgh County Fire Department, uniting personnel and resources to continue a legacy of dedicated service while expanding fire protection and emergency medical care capabilities for our residents.
The merger with German Township Fire Department expanded VCFD’s coverage area to over 100 square miles and added in-house ambulance services to German Township’s district. This enhancement improves response times and ensures seamless access to both fire protection and advanced life support treatment and transport. Volunteers continue to play a vital role in our mission, working alongside career staff to provide trusted, reliable service across suburban Vanderburgh County.
Today, VCFD operates five fire stations with our headquarters located on Baseline Road.
